May 28th Service Learning

For service learning we are planing to have a fundraiser to raise money so we can buy school supplies. We are also creating a request from for people to sing that are interested in being a tutor next year. I don' really know what to do for a whole 90 min class. Their is not that many things to do in the tutoring group. we are still not sure on what our plan is for tutoring next year but it is a working progress.

For next year it would be better if we did service learning one a week or twice a month. It would be great if we could leave school to do independent service learning. I think that it would be better to do it all year long instead of at the end of the year.

Job Letter (In place of Motif Essay)

Dear to whom it may concern;

I’m a 16-year-old 10th grader that attends Constitution High School. I will be a member of the first class to graduate from CHS in 2010. During my first two years of high school I have obtained straight A’s and a 4.0 GPA. During my high school time I have taken an AP Biology class, Constitution course, African American course, Spanish I and II. I speak Spanish, French, and English. I’m involved in many school activities such as: Mock Trial, Student Government, Student Judge, Newspaper, and many other activities. I have gone to the “Lawyer For a Day” event, the NALP, The Association for Legal Career Professionals, and many other law based events.

I think I’m the best person for the job. I am a very hard worker and I’m very good at organizing things. I love to help people in need. I am a very detail oriented person. I used to work for my grandfather’s renovation business as his receptionist. I have experience answering phones, taking messages, and record keeping.

I believe that working for Ballard Spahr will be a great learning experience for me. This internship will show me the day-to-day operations of a law firm. I can experience how hard or easy it is to be a lawyer. I have always thought that it was fun to be a lawyer and that it was easy. This experience will help me to figure out if I really want to be a lawyer or not. This can also show me the ups and downs of being a lawyer. This internship can expose me to all types of lawyers. I believe that I learn better when I am experiencing something very important. I have always been told that the lessons that you learn while being a lawyer will help you later on.

May 15

On May 15th we decided to do fundraisers to help buy school supplies. we also decided who was going to help raise money on what days. I'm not really sure if there was any problems going on but from what I saw everything was going smoothly. I have learned that it is not easy coming up with a plan to create a tutoring club in a school and it is not easy do so with a while lot of people. when i went into the group i didn't have a stereotype about anythings so I guess my opinion didn't change at all its still the same. i rally didn't learn anything about myself because i already knew that i work better by myself but other than that i didn't learn anything.

Friday's meeting

On Friday I had fun. during our meeting we assigned roles and we also rewrote the question air that we created. The only challenges we have now it to find out what schools are we going to call to ask them for help on setting up our in house torturing program. I need to find schools that are close to us so I can call them to ask them info on how to set up a tutoring program. I also need to set up a appointment so we can go see how their program works. In my group I am the researcher.

Empire of the Sun ( Grade this-In place of Theme Essay)

Empire of the Sun

The movie Empire of the Sun was a very good movie. It had a lot of great conflict in it and it really showed how family was a very big deal in the movie. This movie is a movie to watch when you are teaching kids on how to pick out family values. This movie took place back in the 1940’s during the war with Japan and China. This boy named James and his family lived in China but they were British and the Japanese can in and made them leave the country. During the movie Family becomes a very big thing to James.

Before the war started James was a very normal boy. He had a mother and a father. He was British living in China as royalty. His parents were very rich, loving, and caring. He was a part of the Chinese family because he had Chinese maids and surfers. They also taught him how to speak their language. He had a very unique relationship with his mother. They acted all suddy like rich people acted back in the 1940’s and still to this day. Sometimes they mistreated the maids, which he calls family.

During the war Jamie was very confused, because he didn’t really know what he wanted to be. During the war all of the people in China was sent to concentration camps. While being in the camps he became friends with many different groups of people. He was friends with the Japanese, Americans, and the British. Jim was friends with the British but he really didn’t like them even though they shared the same blood. Jim loved the Japanese because he wanted to be just like them. He wanted to fly their cool airplanes. Due to the fact that Jim knew so many different languages he was able to communicate with different groups of people. Jim also wanted to be an American. He wanted to be an American because they were more laided back, adventurous, fun, and cool to be around unlike the British. He said, “That the British people on the other hand was stuffy, old school, and very traditional.”

After the war James was finally reunited with his parents after being split in the beginning of the war. When he finally saw his parents after 3 to 4 years he didn’t recognize them. After the war James was a smarter person. By him going through so much pain being in the camps he gained knowledge. He finally realized that there are all types of people in the world. There are evil people, good/nice people; people that will play you, and people that can’t be trusted. He realized that everyone can’t be family. I think that by him experiencing this war it made him better person. It made him finally figure out who he was. At the end of the movie he threw away all of his memories, dreams, and realized that this war was reality and not fiction.

This movie really showed how that anyone you’re around for a long period of time can start to become your family. This movie really shows how just the little things in life can make people stick together and help each other to survive. Throughout this movie I realized that all of my friends and teachers are a little family to me. This movie showed me how important it is to have a family and how hurtful and lonely it can be without a family.

Reflections on the pre law convention

Yesterday was an okay day because it wasn't what I thought it would be. I learned a lot of things. I learned that there is a lot of ways to get scholarships and don't listen to people when they tell you you can't do something. Don't ever not apply to a college just because you think that your not going to get in, do it anyway. I was told to think about what I want to do Nd why I want to do it, if my reasons are good than continue with my dreams.

How to write a play

“To be or, not too be” is really not a question… Okay, Okay, so we are not really writing Shakespeare here, we are young playwrights… is a program that was created to inspire students literacy learning and creativity. It’s a program where students can express their creativity and certain topics or issues. Adele Magner created Young Playwrights in 1986. Young Playwrights has more than 50 sites with over 60,000 students joining the program a year. With each site they are assigned Playwrights, professional writers, and actors to help the students create a play.

Steps to writing a play

• In order to write a play you must have an idea
• Plan out how you want the play to go but remember that your plan can change as time goes on.
• Think of a setting, characters, conflict, maybe a solution, a great way to grab your audience, and maybe you want to have your character change by the end of the play.
There is no real way to write a play. In a since “You are the GOD in your play.” You can write your play anyway you want to. Good suggestions for inspiring playwrights:
• When you are stuck find a place that inspires you
• Ask for help
• Read it out loud and have your class tell you what they like or don’t like o you can make changes to it.
• Always write down what ever you think of during the day. Sometimes the scenes you write you may keep it and you may not keep it.
When the play is done you can send it in to the Annual Playwriting Festival. When the plays are send in they have professional writers and actors reading over each play and giving comments on each play. After that they will send you a letter telling you if you won first, second or third place. First, second and third place winners are picked from the elementary school level, middle school level, and the high school level. The first place winners have their plays preformed by professional actors.

Interviews

I have interviewed two students from the young playwrights program one from the tenth grade and one from the ninth grade. I also interviewed McMillan. One of the students by the name of Shakyra Wilson 9th grade was interviewed. During the interview I was told that she likes being in the program and she will continue to participate in this program. Shakyra said, “Being in this program she learned a lot of things like: how to write a play, how to create emotional characters, how to put scenes together, how to put emotions down on paper, and how to separate characters.” She said, “When she came to Young Playwrights she thought that it was going to be corny, but she changed her mined as time went on.” While in this program she was helped by other students and the teachers. She also said, “The teacher was very quiet and it was like she really wasn’t in the room at all.”
I also interviewed Jada Walton 10th grade. During the interview she told, me that “Being in Young Playwrights she learned how to write a play, to be creative, to be more persuasive and expressive with words.” She also told me, “ she doesn’t like being in the program sometimes because its stressful and it gets in the way of school, but it can be vary fun. Jada is working on a play with Doriean Jackson and they are thinking about smiting their play this year and joining the program again next year.
I also wanted to get a teachers point of view on this topic so I interviewed Ms. McMillan. M. McMillan loves the program and looks forward to every meeting. She loves how it gives students the freedom to express themselves with few rules. Young Playwrights is a more creative than your average class. It also gives students a new experience, encourages the freedom of expression, and gives students a chance to build something and have it seen live or on stage. These are the words of Ms. McMillan.

Doing this article I have learned a lot about the program and how people feel about this program called Young Playwrights. If you are interested in joining the club next year talk to Ms. McMillan. This is a very fun club to be apart of. It is a lot of hard work but it pays off at the end.

ideas in mind

I live to tutor kids because i believe that if kids have someone that is willing to spend time with them and show them that someone cares about them then the world would be a lot better. i love to be around little kids and to play learning games with them. I believe that if you put things that you want kids to learn in a game then they will learn it faster and it will stick better. kids learn better when they are having fun.

service is important because we are helping out the community. when you help someone out you never know when you may need someone in life. helping other people is like the "pay it back" thing. where you help someone and they help someone and it goes on and on. when you help someone it can be a good thing because that very person you just helped can be a millionaire or something and they can give you and award for helping them. I love to help people because that's just me.

service learning ideas

1. tutor students
2. help homeless people
3. volunteer at the YMCA
4. set up a recycling club
5. set up a tutoring club for students that needs help in different classes in our school.
6. plan fun trips to take kids on, so they can learn about Philadelphia.

independent service hours

For my independent service hours I volunteered to help out with the high school fare. I helped the school bring in students that wants to come to our school next year as freshmen. I learned that it is fun to help other people and it makes you feel good about yourself. I found out that my school dad Mr. Overton worked at an all boys school as the princal, Mr. Razano is the V.P., and Mr. Richardson is the math teacher at that school. I also had fun because I got to take pictures with Reshay and Zoe. I made so new friends from chad high school. they are all graduating in June.

Questions - Synthesis

5. How many ways could Bigger have killed Mary and how could he expose of the body?

There are many ways you can expose of a body. You can dump it into the river with a brike tied to the bottom of it, you can burn it, chop it up and feed it to the animals, barry it or freeze it. He could have put her to sleep with chlrox on a rag or he could have injected her with heroin, crack, cocaine and killed her with that.
If I was Bigger I would have injected her with the drugs and then chopped her up and feed her to the rats. then burned the clothes and dumped the tools in the river after i cleaned them off, so by the time they found out that she was dead they couldn't find her or find evidence on how she was killed.

Questions - Analysis

4. What was the motive behind Bigger killing Mary?

Bigger killed Mary because he was scared of getting caught by Mary's blind mother. He felt that if he was caught with mary then he would be killed or thrown in jail. He really wasn't sure so he killed her by accident. She was killed out of fear.

Monday, March 3, 2008

Questions - Application

3. What questions would you ask of Mary if she could speak from the dead?

If I could ask Mary a question, I would ask her, " Do you blame Bigger for killing you?" Mary would say, " If I was a live I would tell bigger that : " i just wanted to come here and tell you that I'm not angry... I'm not angry and i want you to let me help you. i don't hate you for trying to blame this thing on me... maybe you had good reasons... i don't know. and maybe in a certain sense, I'm the one who's really guilty...." " bigger, I've never done anything against you and your people in my life. but I'm a white woman and it would be asking too much to ask you not hate me, when every white person you see hates you. i know my face looks like theirs to you, even though i don't know we were so far apart until that night... i can understand now why you put all of your weight on me when my mother walked in the room. it was the only thing you could have done, but i didn't know that my white face was making you feel guilty, condemning you." then she would say she forgives him and she hates that whites frown upon blacks. basically when Mary came back she would tell bigger how sorry she is about how things turned out.

questions - Comprehension

2. What made Bigger want to feel up on a drunk White women?

Bigger was happy that the White girl was drunk, so he decided to cop a field. Because she was White and he was black he thought that it was the ultimate taboo to have a relations with a White women.

Question- Knowledge

1. Who was it that killed the rat?
In the beginning of the book bigger killed the rat with a skillet?

reflections on NHD

During the NHD project it was very stressful and I don't think that I will do a documentary again. doing a documentary was very stressful and there was not enough computers to work on or enough cameras to use. next year I think that were should start a lot earlier that we did. we should start some where in September. I learned that you need to pick a topic that you really feel strongly about and not to get mad fast. Next year I will do a project by myself or something other than documentary.I will never do documentary ever again. I really don't like to do NHD because it gets in the way of other things and it is to stressful. Next year we need to have a class where you learn how to use iMovie.

Chapter 6: The Big Wack off pgs. 28-30

Description
Bigger and his friends brought a ticket to a movie. When they got there the movie didn’t start yet, so they were listening to a soft and low pipe organ playing. While setting in the seat Bigger’s breathing started to change and he looked around to see if anyone was looking or near him. Next Bigger slouched down in the seat and be gains to masturbate while Jack is next to him doing the same. In the process Jack gets hard as a rod and bigger isn’t quite there yet. As they are masturbating, Jack says that “He thinks some ladies saw them” and Bigger says,” If they walk back I’ll put it in her.” Jack says that, “If they see it then they will faint or want to grab it. Then they both have an orgasms and move to different seats.

Richard Wright Reason:
Richard Wright wrote this chapter to show that African American Kids in the 1930’s really had nothing better to do with their lives. He shows that the kids had to be in dark places in order to express themselves r to relax and have fun. He has shown that what kids do in the dark you really can’t do in the light because it’s really frowned upon or it’s not respected. He also wrote this chapter to show the beginning of his man hood. It gives you the start of where Bigger feels like he has become a man.

Purple Notes 2

Chapter 5: I Wanna fly, pages 14-17

Break down of Chapter:
Bigger walked towards the poolroom when he saw Gus and asked, “If he saw Jack?” Gus said, “ no” and then the two of them enjoyed a nice cigarette break while looking into the sky and dreaming of the various things they could do if they weren’t black. Things like flying high in the sky or having a high paying job to support his family.

The Analysis:
Richard Wright wrote this piece to sell this perspective that black men are the “ INFERIOR” as well as the scapegoats for the violence that is caused in all society.

AP Bio. Project

In AP Bio I'm doing a project on the Affect of Antacids Treatments on the pH level of stomach acid. Today I just found out that I'm going to be in the school science fair. While doing this project I had a lot of fun because this project was so near and dear to my heart. I found out a lot of information on acid refluxes. I learned that Prilosec was the best medicine to use, but it did not work for me it just made me sicker. so i decided not to use it anymore. During this project i felt a little better about my problem because it let me know that sometimes the medicine the Dr. give you really don't work.

Last Years NHD Project

Last year for my NHD project i did William Still as my topic.I learned a lot of information on Mr. Still. I learned that he was called the "father a of the underground rail road". He use to live here a nin Philadelphia and he tried his best to reunite families back together. Back then whits in the south had Slaves and they were not allowed to be free they had to be slaves. so some slaves ran a way from the south and came to Philly to be free. when they arrived, William Still gave them a place to stay and helped get to a safe place, where they could be free. As time went on he helped people reunite with there families. I loved doing the William Still project last year. Now there are freshman's working on the William Still project.

Geometry Project

I did my project on Johannes Kapler. I learned a lot about him and his accomplishments. I picked him because I have never heard of him before a d I thought that it would be cool to research someone new.

NHD Summary

Felicia Green 12/13/07
Social Studies 3&4
Topic Essay

I am doing my NHD project on religion and prayer in school. I choose this topic because it’s very near and dear to my heart. With religion and prayer in school there are a lot of different people involved in this big problem that were are having in the world. With every case there is different date and there are different people and all types of point of views. Each case is very different because you don’t really know what the problem was or why they are taken that person to court until you read the case. At the end of NHD I hope to come out with a better understand of why the government feels so strong about separation of “church and state.” The big question I have is: Why do the government want you to keep religion out of school when the world was founded on Christianity and you have religion all in the text books that you teach the students.
I feel that religion and prayer related to conflict and compromise. For many years people have been fighting over this topic because they feel, as thought that you should teach religion in school but on the other hand people feel like you should keep religion out of school completely. The conflict of my topic is that people get into fights when you talk about religion. They also then have a problem with the government when they bring religion into school because so they say its unconstitutional to talk or teach religion in school. The compromise is that you are allowed to express your religious believes in school but only during non-instructional time. For example like during lunch, recess, after school and before school. You are also allowed to have religious groups in school but there are limits to that.
To conclude this essay while doing this project I really hope to feel a lot better about what happened to me in the third grade. It also want educate people about there rights and the rules about religious expression in public schools. I believe that kids will really learn from my project that you can find ways to teach religion in school with out having problems.
